A Music Residency program.
WORLDZERO. A nuclear aftermath revealing the shadows of the dead. A release of noxious gas. Images of trees fighting through concrete rubble within bombed out districts. Found and neglected objects reimagined. Surfaces and reflections show gateways into alternate states. Original form and purpose have been forgotten. A cold, dead space becomes alive and the warmth awakens new formations. Light seeps from cracked walls and the sound becomes a heavy levitation. the ark is leaving. The ark has already returned.
Samarbeta are pleased to announce the 15th residency: a collaboration between UKAEA, THE SEER and IMPATV entitled WORLDZERO. Taking place in Unit 3, Regents Trading, behind Islington Mill, the residency will see the creation, development and presentation of a new performance that will explore elements of acoustic and electronic sound, body performance, costume and set design, spoken word, light design and mapped projections. WORLDZERO will lead audiences through a post-apocalyptic filter, re-imagining what it means to be human when the old world collapses and a new one is born from its ashes.
The performance will be developed during the Salford residency, under the art direction of Charly Blackburn (UKAEA) and Conny Prantera (THE SEER) with Dan Jones (UKAEA) for sound creation and Jamie Robinson and Isadora Darke (IMPATV) for video content, light design and projections.
WORLDZERO will invite a select number of Manchester-based musicians as well as musicians from London and Sheffield. Collaborating artists include: Deyar Yasin, Charlotte Wendy Law, Kaya Moore, Amdeep Sanghera, Sanna Charles and Tom Fug.
The audience will be invited to experience a breakdown of boundaries between hitherto separate elements of the performance. The material generated will be sampled, manipulated, transformed and fed back, flowing across artistic disciplines and bridging the distance between performer and audience. Performers will inhabit character roles which will drive the narrative of the piece through actions and interactions, body performance and spoken word, and will find symbolic analogue in sound and light.
WORLDZERO will be premiered in the Unit 3 warehouse on Thursday 11th July and then taken on to Supersonic Festival on 21st July with plans for a London show in late summer/autumn.
THE SEER is a radical sound performance piece with an anarcho-feminist theme at its core. The piece is based on an evocative narrative that tells the story of the doomed Homeric Cassandra, revisited through the eyes of a modern day prophet.
The Seer, originally presented at Supersonic Festival in 2017, has been performed in a variety of formats since, from small solo stage sets to sound/video installations and large theatrical performances, directed by Conny Prantera and comprising a rotating group of musicians and artists.
UKAEA began as one person’s vehicle for exploring techno and physical electronic music, but in correlation with a mounting degree of frustration at the strictures of the form, it has expanded to encompass a more collaborative, unpredictable approach. Now, as a constantly-changing group of musicians and performers, UKAEA is primarily concerned with the exploration of trance-dance as a recurring phenomenon in music cultures around the globe.
IMPATV is a video platform sharing ideas, art and expression, recording and broadcasting the heavier side of DIY, experimental and underground culture. The video style derives from the interplay of obsolete video equipment and new technology, learning from the past and looking to the future, changing with the music with the aim to create a total Gesamtkunstwerk.
