A Music Residency program.
15th -26th April 2019
Live performance: 26th April 2019
Niamos Radical Arts Centre, Warwick St, Hulme, Manchester M15 5EU
Samarbeta are pleased to announce the 14th residency, a collaboration between synth-driven psych band Moon Duo (Portland OR) and Emmanuel Biard, a Manchester based live visual projection artist. The project entitled Stardust Highway: Experiments in Stoner Disco, will use live music and video art to explore ideas about time, ritual, and the human desire to transcend material reality.
Moon Duo will explore the conceptual commonalities between performance and ritual, with a focus on sonic repetition and the merging of particular human energies in the physical space shared by artist and audience. The live show will cultivate an experience that feels, in a sense, out of time, as it play with idioms of psych rock and dance music in a perception-shifting visual environment inspired by 70’s discotheques and the psychedelic experience.
“When we make a album we tend to approach the process with a specific conceptual underpinning in mind - the residency offers the chance to apply this approach to our live show as well. While we have always sought to have some kind of transformative visual component to our live performances, to change the space of the room we’re in, we have not in the past attempted to tie the components of the stage show to a specific album or concept. When we started working with Emmanuel he brought new depth and breadth to that aspect of our show; through the residency we’re hoping to deepen that artistic relationship by collaborating on a specific conceptual framework for a live show to reflect and interact with the ideas at work on our upcoming album.”
The residency will take place in a disused industrial warehouse on the Regents Trading Estate in Salford with the artist living adjacent in the Islington Mill B&B. The artists will have time and space away from everyday restraints to focus in developing their creativity through this collaboration.
The debut performance will then premiere at the Niamos Radical Arts Centre, Warwick St, Hulme, Manchester M15 5EU on Friday 26th April.
About Moon Duo
Founded in 2009, Moon Duo is a project of Wooden Ships' Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. Based between Portland and San Francisco, Moon Duo are a psychedelic Krautrock band with chilly electronic underpinnings and drones. They explore concept of magick and the supernatural inspired by the root of the word occult is that which is hidden, concealed, beyond the limits of our minds.
Signed to the Sacred Bones label, Moon Duo’s most recent album Occult Architecture is a psychedelic opus in two separate volumes released in 2017. It is an intricately woven hymn to the invisible structures found in the cycle of seasons and the journey of day into night, dark into light. It offers a cosmic glimpse into the hidden patterning embedded in everything reflecting the harmonious duality of these light and dark energies through the Chinese theory of Yin and Yang. Sonically the new records represent a dimensional shift in perspective for the band. Occult Architecture is a shedding of genre tropes, and an inviting in of new textures and soundscapes reflective of the album’s shimmering Yin/Yang qualities.
