A Music Residency program.
Monkey Puzzle Trio are a band made up of Charles Hayward, Pinski Zoo and Crackle bassist Nick Doyne-Ditmas and the words and voice of avant guarde vocalist Viv Corringham. They performed together at Maxwell Hall on the stage curated by Fat Out Til You Pass Out, Gizeh Records and Buried Bones, and showcased their new album, The Pattern Familiar. An improvised recording based on the themes ‘leave space for the vocals, leave space for the brass’, this recording led to both Hayward and bassist Nick Doyne-Ditmas composing a three part brass section to complete the record.
One of Samarbeta's main aims is bringing musicians to Greater Manchester and involve them in the local music scene and encourage them to collaborate with local musicians. Hayward's Friday night headlining performance at Fat Out Fest completely embodied this. Performing with all the musicians Hayward had met and collaborated with during his residency the outcome was raucous improvisation of gnarled riffs, offset rhythms and squealing saxophonic psychedelia. This was Anonymous Bash.
Charles Hayward has been on Video Jam's wish list for a while now so they were ecstatic to have the opportunity to invite him to partake in one of their curated events. Hayward will be given the challenge of scoring James Snazell's '3 Frames'. After meeting each other at Fat Out Fest and Snazell seeing the incredible live score that Hayward produced, they decided to collaborate again at another Video Jam event in November 2014 at The Vaults in London.
Gizeh Records hosted a four hour continuous improvised performance on the 5th floor loft space at Islington Mill as part of Fat Out Fest 2014. Featuring up to 20 musicians at one time, each hour was lead by a different group or artist, and the improv king that is Hayward lead the second hour. Starting on the drums to give the musicians a solid starting rhythm he then abandoned his kit and made his way round the room conducting the ensemble producing this well controlled and thoughtful improvisation.
As part of Charles's residency programme Samarbeta we took him out to Picidlly Gardens to go busking on order to recruit musicians and open up the collaboration beyong our network ofg musicians.
Hayward ended up imporvising with Danny Henry, Jali & the Kora and the world percussion collective.
This event will be the official launch party of Anonymous Bash where the record will be performed LIVE in its entirety.
